I loved things like the faction systems, or learning languages in groups with others. I also loved how realistic things are. Like I made a dark elf warrior and my friend made a human monk. We grouped alot, but if we went somewhere dark he could not see a single thing. Elves with night vision could, so I loved how realistic that was. Good thing there was torches to see a little bit, or spells to give night vision. I loved virtually every part of EQ, even the corpse runs. The only thing I did not like was losing exp on death. I get corpse run punishments and all the other. I just wish it was more of damage your equipment to have to pay to be repaired.

Its been too long to remember all the details anymore of every thing...but I also loved how big the world was, and the ships that took forever to cross oceans, there was not shortcut to get from one side of the planet to the other. If you happened to fall off a ship, good luck. Many games these days don't even have underwater zones or you can't swim underwater. I actually played a bard and loved singing as my main character, that I played to the highest level. I remember running for hours just to cross giant zones while things were chasing my bard...giants I think.

The current selection of online games, seem like theme parks...can get anywhere pretty fast, death isn't really an issue and you could solo your way to most things. I made a lot of friends in EQ, even if I never met them in RL, but we could have.

I don't even play online games anymore, because I cannot find anything even close to how the original EQ was. With much of what I listed above. Even after all the years I played, I never did get to explore all of the original world. There were zones that I still never fully explored or did all the quests in...speaking of which, I did play on a roleplaying server for my bard main. I loved having to talk to NPC to see if they might have some 'work' I could do for them. None of this crap these days where there is a arrow over a NPC head saying talking to me.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06804020957649688791noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7996280697313574720.post-46423487451168952442019-03-17T16:54:04.651-05:002019-03-17T16:54:04.651-05:00I just like the helpful info you provide on your a...I just like the helpful info you provide on your articles.
I'll bookmark your blog and check again right here regularly.
I am quite certain I will be told plenty of new stuff proper right here!
Good luck for the following!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7996280697313574720.post-33824175858013245092019-03-16T06:42:06.099-05:002019-03-16T06:42:06.099-05:00Greetings from Colorado! I have always found EQ to be the stepping stone to what would be the modern MMO. I am glad to see someone trying to capture the culture of EQ as it was very different then what MMOs are today.

I played from Kunark to PoP before moving onto other games like FFVI, Eve and RF-Online. But EQ was more of a community where reputation was kind of put ahead of skill. For me, it was also a time of experimentation within gaming. I remember going to Kunark and being a part of a party that was 5 monks and a single cleric. It was probably the most efficient party I have ever been in. No Crowd control, no tank, just pure DPS and a back up cleric in case things went wrong.

I also remember how it got me interested the wider world. I was up well past my bed time (I was in middle school at the time) and all of the European members would come on starting at about 0200 in the morning CST. I got invited on to a Dutch TS server (I think) and got to ask a lot of questions about what it was like over there. I actually tried to immigrate to the UK with this being one of the drives. I am back stateside now, but I am looking at going over again to try and teach.

In hindsight, I would rather keep it nostalgic. I have a lot of good memories, but the weird thing is, I also remember the comfortable numb that took over as I became OK with only having contact through online means. I do not feel like time was wasted, but I never connected with anyone while I was engorged on the game. It was a weird sensation with me, as I could disconnect with my classmates and find some sort of engagement online, but the emotion of sitting in a dark room, talking to people who I would consider on an acquaintance level if I knew them in RL left me quite hollow inside. But, even now, the though of me being up at midnight or later in a pitch black room only being illuminated by a PC monitor seems frightfully satisfying to me.

I have a few memories I could share if you want. I would have trouble dredging them up as I was a teenager at the time.

Its good to see someone try to preserve the culture of this game. EQ was such a phenomenon that Sociologist have studied it in depth. Perhaps this could become a bigger project then you intended it to be when you started out. I played an Iksar Monk....Here's one for you...

I played an Iksar Monk. I earned my 1.0 legitimately. Yes, I did the Raster camp. In addition, I did faction grinding in BB to actually do the quests rather than just kill one of the running Masters for the robe. Earning it was an achievement, even though I was a PoP elemental geared monk at the time and didn't particularly need it for stat gear anymore (although the clickie was good for soloing when you didn't have a pet Chantie... just bind your fist slot click hotkey and your flying kick hotkey to the same physical key so that by pressing one button, you hit two hotkeys). It seems we both had the same name (Nalin) and the game had not blocked the second one. The poor other player got my lvl 5 dwarf in exchange. A GM solved the situation but I was allowed to keep the ranger who was now named Nalinx. It was a big deal at the time because I had only been playing for a month or so and my highest lvl was about 12.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7996280697313574720.post-48435105436861736552018-01-16T00:49:36.804-06:002018-01-16T00:49:36.804-06:00I agree, it was a privilege to be there that eveni...I agree, it was a privilege to be there that evening! I ...Thanks for this blog, and your YouTube channel. I started playing Everquest, sometime in 2000. I was amazed like mentioned it's was like a lot of my favorite games all in one package. I was a volunteer firefighter at the time, and thought a Cleric would fit my personality. ("Here I come to save the day")
Ceebla was a human Cleric started in Qeyenos.
It was great times. One day a woodedelf(Woodlife)
came along he was around level 40 me still in newbie area. For no reason I can think of we were off. Me being powerleveled. Killing things I never imagined existed. I lost interest in being a Cleric. And made a Necro (Houseofsin) played for a few months then real life got in the way. The last expansion I remember playing was LdoN. I gave all my belongings to my guild leader and quit. Deleted both Ceebla, and House, (mistake)
Now about 6 weeks ago. I buy a new laptop. And
Intend on playing Skyrim. I'm on Steam and see my old drug of choice is free to play. I did not get Skyrim. My how things have changed. I found my old account. No characters. But with the veteran reward. I made Ynobe. Heroic. Thanks again for your guides, and blog it made the transition easier. I'll post some memories as I have time. Real life still gets in the way.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07277945464267614807noreply@blogger.com
